Hotel Emeline
Upper King · 4★
A boutique 212-room hotel just off King Street, perfectly placed for walking the historic district — with one of the best lobby coffee programs in the city.
The 212 rooms are designed in a literary, slightly eclectic style — full bookshelves, vintage rugs, antique-feeling fixtures with modern beds and bathrooms. The on-site coffee program at Clerks Coffee Company is a destination in its own right; locals line up for it. The Restaurant at the hotel (Frannie & The Fox) does respectable wood-fired Italian. Service is friendly without being formal.
Emeline isn't trying to be the most luxurious hotel in Charleston (Belmond and the Wentworth claim that). It's pitched at travelers who want excellent design, a walkable location, and modern amenities without paying $700 a night for chandeliers. For most first-time Charleston visitors, this is the sweet spot.
